Can I install and run Ableton Live Suite off an external hard drive I'm really pressed for space and my XPS13 literally has no room. will ableton run completely off an external harddrive?

I have a sony vaio running ableton 7 and want to upgrade to 8 suite (and buy a mac) unfortunately, buying a mac will have to wait but I am planning on buying 8..my problem is that my internal hard drive is maxed out. Is it possible to run 8 suite completely off an external hard drive - probably an ssd at 7200 usb 2.0- will it be slower than using the internal? is it worth it to run live like this? I'd hate to have to delete most of my programs on my internal just to have enough space for 8 suite.
